Tila homa: black sesame offered into the sacred fire

The stated Srirangapatna Tila Homa sequence is Ganapati puja, purification, sankalp, kalasha sthapana, sesame homa, purnahuti and tarpan. Knowing these stages helps a family understand the ceremony instead of seeing it only as a continuous fire ritual. The officiating priest leads the recitation and offerings.

1. Ganapati puja and preparation

The rite opens with Ganapati puja. This is followed by punyahavachana, the purification rite named in the service. These preparatory observances come before the main fire offerings; they are not additional ancestor bookings.

The exact mantras and gestures belong to the priest's procedure. Watching a brief online clip is not enough to reproduce that whole sequence. If attending, follow the priest's direction about when to sit, join a prayer or make an offering.

2. Sankalp: dedicating the ceremony

The sankalp states the dedication of the puja. Prepare the ancestors' names clearly, including the relationship where that helps avoid confusion between relatives with similar names. The current Divine Hindu variant covers up to four pitrs; clarify a longer list before arranging the ceremony.

If a name or gotra is unknown, explain what you do know. The priest can guide the appropriate wording. Guessing a lineage or inventing a name does not make the dedication more accurate.

3. Kalasha sthapana

Kalasha sthapana is the establishment of the sacred water pot. It is a distinct preparatory stage before the homa in this service. A kalasha seen beside the fire should not be confused with the later tarpan: one is part of the preparation, while the other is separately named as an ancestral offering.

4. Tila offerings into the fire

Black sesame is the defining offering of this ancestral homa. The priest conducts the fire rite and makes the offerings with the prescribed recitation. The family need not supply an internet-derived count of 108, 1,008 or any other number; the listing does not specify one.

The same care applies to ingredients. The service identifies sesame but does not publish a full measured homa recipe. Follow the performing priest's arrangement rather than combine ingredient lists from unrelated homas.

5. Purnahuti and named tarpan

Purnahuti is the concluding full offering into the fire. In this Srirangapatna service it is followed by tarpan for the named pitrs. This is why a family should understand both the fire-offering stage and the water-offering stage when reviewing the booking.

Other programmes may arrange related rites separately. M.A. Center's Tila Homa event, for example, distinguishes its homa from the guided Pitru Puja that follows. Its remote-participation material list belongs to that programme and should not be treated as the ingredient list for every Tila Homa.

How can the family prepare?

  • Agree which departed family members are to be named.
  • Provide accurate names and any requested family details.
  • Share a relevant death tithi or the reason for choosing an ancestral observance.
  • Take the priest's advice on any family-specific food, fasting or attendance practice.

A simple moment of remembrance can make the preparation meaningful: recall something learned from the person, or share a memory with younger relatives. This is a personal suggestion, not an extra compulsory ritual or a replacement for the priest's instructions.

Private service, recording and location

The Divine Hindu Srirangapatna listing specifies a private puja for your family. It promises a video on WhatsApp within three to four days and date confirmation by WhatsApp. It does not state a live call, couriered prasad or a fixed duration.

The listed location is Srirangapatna. Do not assume that a reference to the town means the homa occurs inside the Ranganathaswamy Temple. For context, read Tila Homa's meaning; for scheduling, see occasions and common questions.
