Rudrabhisheka — Srikanteshwara Temple, Nanjangud
What This Remedy Does
This Rudrabhisheka bathes the linga of Shiva as Nanjundeshwara, at the Srikanteshwara Temple in Nanjangud, as the Sri Rudram is chanted. Booked in your name, it is performed by the temple's priests with your gotra and up to four names in the sankalp. When it is complete, the temple receipt or a confirmation is shared on WhatsApp.
What is Rudrabhisheka?
Rudrabhisheka is how Karnataka spells Rudrabhishekam: the abhishekam, or sacred bathing, of the Shiva linga while the Sri Rudram is recited. The Sri Rudram joins two Vedic hymns from the Krishna Yajurveda, the Namakam and the Chamakam. Milk, curd, honey, ghee and water are offered over the linga one after another. Bilva leaves, an archana of Shiva's names and the aarti with lamps complete the seva. At Nanjangud the linga is that of Nanjundeshwara, the lord who swallowed poison to protect the world.
Why devotees book it
- A prayer for health and long life, offered alongside medical care, as devotees have long done here
- Peace of mind and harmony in the family, asked of Shiva as Nanjundeshwara
- Steadiness sought through worship during a difficult graha period, as tradition advises
- Thanksgiving to Shiva after a hope is fulfilled or a vow is kept
When to book
Mondays and Pradosham, the evening twilight kept for Shiva, are traditional days for a Rudrabhisheka, along with Maha Shivaratri. Many families also book it in the Karthigai or Karthika month, or for a birthday by birth star. The Nanjangud date is confirmed with you by our team on WhatsApp.
About Srikanteshwara Temple
The Srikanteshwara Temple stands on the bank of the Kapila, or Kabini, river at Nanjangud in Mysuru district, Karnataka. Here Shiva is Nanjundeshwara, remembered as the one who drank poison so that the world would be protected. For generations, devotees have brought their prayers for health to Nanjangud, alongside medical care. A Rudrabhisheka to Nanjundeshwara is, for many, a way to place such a prayer before Shiva in faith.
