What This Remedy Does

Duration: Confirmed with you before the puja

Bali Tharpanam at Thirunelli is the Kerala rite for ancestors, offered at the Papanasini stream near the Thirunelli Temple in Wayanad. A priest performs it on your behalf with your name, your gotra and your ancestors' names in the sankalp. You then receive photos or video of the rite on WhatsApp, within 3 to 4 days.

What is Bali Tharpanam?

Bali tharpanam, also called vavu bali, is the Kerala rite for ancestors. Rice balls (bali) with sesame, water and darbha grass are offered by a river or the sea, guided by a priest. The ancestors' names and the family's gotra are said as the offering is made. At Thirunelli the rite takes place at the Papanasini stream, near the temple of Vishnu. It is traditionally performed on Amavasya, the new-moon day known in Kerala as vavu.

Why devotees book it

  • Remembering and honouring parents, grandparents and other ancestors
  • A prayer for peace for a departed member of the family
  • A traditional remedy for pitru dosha, offered with calm devotion
  • Seeking the blessings of the ancestors for the family's path ahead

When to book

Families offer bali tharpanam on Karkidaka Vavu, on any Amavasya day and on the death anniversary (thithi) of a loved one. Share the tithi when you book if you know it. The Thirunelli date is then fixed with you over WhatsApp.

About Thirunelli Temple

The Thirunelli Temple stands in the Brahmagiri hills of Wayanad district, Kerala, and is dedicated to Vishnu. Near the temple flows the Papanasini stream, where families perform bali tharpanam for their ancestors. Many pilgrims call Thirunelli the Kashi of the South. Offering bali at the Papanasini is, for many families, a way to honour their ancestors at a place pilgrims revere.
