Pitru Tarpanam — Agnitheertham, Rameswaram
What This Remedy Does
Pitru Tarpanam at Agnitheertham, Rameswaram, is the offering of water and black sesame to your ancestors as their names are chanted. A local priest performs it at a ritual venue near Agnitheertham, not inside the Ramanathaswamy Temple. Your name, gotra and your ancestors' names go into the sankalp, and photos or video of the rite reach you on WhatsApp.
What is Pitru Tarpanam?
In Pitru Tarpanam, water mixed with black sesame, or til, is offered to the pitrus, the family's ancestors. As it is poured, the priest chants each ancestor's name together with the family gotra. The rite remembers three generations on both sides, the father's and the mother's. Tradition favours holy waters for it, and Agnitheertham, the sea on Rameswaram's eastern shore, is one such place. New-moon days, called Amavasya, and the fortnight of Mahalaya Paksha are its customary times.
Why devotees book it
- To remember parents and grandparents by name and honour them with the family gotra
- A prayer for peace for departed members of the family
- A traditional remedy for pitru dosha, offered calmly as a family duty
- To seek the blessings of the ancestors for the family and its future
When to book
Any Amavasya, or new-moon day, suits a tarpanam, especially Thai, Aadi and Mahalaya Amavasya. Mahalaya Paksha, also called Pitru Paksha, and a death anniversary in the family are customary too. Give the tithi, the lunar date, if you know it, and our team fixes the day with you on WhatsApp.
About Agnitheertham
Facing the Ramanathaswamy Temple, Agnitheertham is the stretch of sea along Rameswaram's eastern shore. Rameswaram, the island town around it, lies in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu. Pilgrims traditionally take a holy dip here before going into the temple, especially on new-moon and full-moon days. Families perform tarpanam and other rites for their ancestors on this shore. Because tradition prefers holy waters for tarpanam, many families feel this sea is a fitting place to remember their pitrus.
