Each sacred wearable carries the energy of a particular deity. Rudraksha is the blessing of Bhagwan Shiva — the beads are lovingly called the tears of Mahadev. Karungali (sacred black ebony) is connected with Shani Dev (Saturn) and Bhagwan Hanuman, worn for protection, courage and relief from the troubles of Shani; in the Tamil tradition it is also dear to Bhagwan Murugan, whose Vel is said to be carved from Karungali wood. Tulsi Mala is dear to Bhagwan Vishnu and Shri Krishna, and to Devi Tulsi herself, so Thursday (Guruvar) — Vishnu's day — or an Ekadashi are the most auspicious days to begin. The holy month of Kartik is considered the very best time of the year to start wearing Tulsi. Before wearing: bathe and wear clean clothes, gently cleanse the mala with a light sprinkle of Gangajal and wipe it dry (Tulsi is delicate, sacred wood and should never be soaked), offer it before your Vishnu or Krishna deity, and chant 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya' or the Hare Krishna Maha-Mantra 108 times.
