Chaitra Navratri is nine nights of worship of Goddess Durga, beginning on the first day of the bright half of Chaitra. It ends with Ram Navami, the day devotees remember the birth of Lord Rama.

This page covers both observances. It helps you choose a Shri Ram murti, a Durga idol or a pocket temple, with notes on mantra and care.

Chaitra Navratri and Durga worship

During Chaitra Navratri, devotees worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga, one on each night. Many keep a fast and light a lamp each day. Some families sow barley in a small pot and keep a kalash during the nine days.

Follow your family's tradition for the daily puja. A Durga idol or image can be placed in the prayer space for the nine days or kept there throughout the year.

Ram Navami and Shri Ram Jayanti

Ram Navami falls on the ninth day of the bright half of Chaitra. It marks the birth of Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu, and is also called Shri Ram Jayanti. Devotees read the Ramayana, sing bhajans and visit Rama temples.

Many families perform a simple puja at home with a lamp, flowers and a sweet. Follow your own tradition, and ask your priest for any details of the ritual.

Choosing a Shri Ram murti or Durga idol

Choose the devotional form relevant to the observance: Devi for Navratri, and Shri Ram or Ram Darbar for Ram Navami. A Ram Darbar usually shows Rama with Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman. Measure your prayer space, then compare the size and material on each listing.

Look through Sacred God Idols and All Frame and Idols for a Shri Ram idol or Shri Ram statue. Check what each product actually includes before you order.

Mantra, pendant and abhishek

A widely chanted Shri Ram mantra is Shri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram. Others chant Om Sri Ramaya Namah. Learn longer mantras, including any beej mantra, from your guru or family elder.

For a Shri Ram pendant, browse Spiritual Jewellery and check each listing. Before any Shri Ram abhishek, read the idol's care guidance. Not every material suits water, milk or oil.
