Diwali, also spelled Deepavali or Deepawali, means a row of lamps. Families clean their homes, light diyas and gather for a puja to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, then share sweets and gifts.

This page covers the Diwali puja, ideas for gifts and decoration items for the home mandir, and answers to common questions. Customs differ by region and family.

Diwali puja vidhi

Many families perform the main Diwali puja in the evening, after cleaning the home and lighting diyas. A simple order is below. Your family or priest may follow a different one.

  1. Clean the puja space and place Lakshmi and Ganesha forms on a clean cloth.
  2. Light a diya and incense, and place flowers.
  3. Pray to Lord Ganesha first, and then to Goddess Lakshmi.
  4. Present sweets and fruit as an offering, and finish with aarti.

Muhurat times depend on your city, so please ask your priest or check a Panchang.

Diwali gifts and gift ideas

Choose a gift by the recipient's taste and the space they have. Devotional gifts include diyas, small Lakshmi and Ganesha forms, jewellery and Rudraksha pieces.

Check the exact contents of any combo before you order. Product photos may show styling items that are not part of the order. Browse spiritual jewellery, Sacred God Idols and Rudraksha malas and beads.

Diwali decoration items for the home mandir

Begin with a diya that suits your space, and check its dimensions and care instructions. Place each lit diya on a steady surface, away from curtains and papers. Bring together a lamp, a favourite devotional object and the puja essentials your family uses.

For a welcoming Diwali corner, add a small idol or frame. Browse frames and idols and Karungali pieces. Each product page states what is included.

Choosing a puja set without duplicates

First list the lamp, thali and idols you already use. Compare each set's included items and dimensions, then add only the missing pieces. A set may list a thali, lamp or idol, so check the items before you add it to your cart.

If you need your order by a particular date, contact Divine Hindu before ordering. We can help you check delivery options for your address.
