Krishna Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna at midnight on Ashtami. This is the eighth lunar day of the dark half of Bhadrapada (Shravana in the Amanta calendar). Many devotees fast until midnight.

Homes and temples are decorated, bhajans are sung, and a small cradle often holds Bal Gopal. This page covers the significance, puja vidhi and how to choose a Krishna idol, pocket temple or Tulsi mala.

Krishna Janmashtami significance

In Hindu tradition, Lord Krishna is the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. He was born in Mathura in the prison of his uncle Kamsa and carried to Gokul on the night of his birth. Stories of his childhood, his friendships and the Bhagavad Gita are told on this day.

In Maharashtra the day is marked by Dahi Handi, where teams form a human pyramid to break a pot of curd. Customs differ across India.

Krishna Janmashtami puja vidhi at home

The puja vidhi differs from family to family, so follow your own tradition. A common home puja is simple:

  1. Clean the puja space and place the Krishna idol or image, often in a small cradle.
  2. Light a lamp and place Tulsi leaves, flowers, butter and sweets before the idol.
  3. Sing or recite Krishna's names, then perform aarti at midnight.
  4. Break your fast only as your family custom directs.

Ask your priest or family elders about the details that apply to you.

Puja samagri and mantra

For the Krishna Janmashtami puja samagri, many families gather a lamp, incense, flowers, Tulsi leaves, butter, sweets and fresh fruit. Add anything your tradition calls for. Fresh offerings are arranged separately from the idol you choose.

A widely chanted Krishna Janmashtami mantra is Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya. Others sing the names of Krishna in kirtan. Follow the mantra your family or guru uses.

Choosing a Krishna idol, pocket temple or Tulsi mala

Check whether the design is a standing idol, a Radha Krishna pair or a pocket temple. Only items listed on the product page are included. Arrange any clothing, cradle and fresh offerings separately.
