Gudi Padwa is the start of the new year for many Marathi families. A gudi is raised outside the home. It is a bright cloth tied to a bamboo staff and topped with neem leaves, sugar crystals, flowers and an inverted pot.
The gudi is seen as a sign of victory and a welcome for the new year. In some traditions the day is linked with Lord Brahma creating the universe, and in others with Lord Rama's victory.
Ugadi means the start of a new age. Homes are cleaned, doors are hung with mango leaves, and many families begin the day with an oil bath and prayer.
Ugadi pachadi, a dish with six tastes, is shared to reflect the mix of experiences in life. Many families also listen to the year's panchangam, or almanac, read aloud. Neem flowers go into the pachadi in many homes, and they stand for the bitter moments of the year.
Gudi Padwa puja differs by family. Many raise the gudi after sunrise, place a lamp before it and say a simple prayer. Some also pray to Lord Ganesha at the start of the year. Ask your priest or family elders about your tradition.
This page lists selected lamps, thalis, idols and devotional gifts. A gudi pole, cloth, leaves, food and other regional supplies are not included unless a listing specifically says so.
For gudi padwa gifts, a Ganesha idol, a lamp or a thali suits a family starting the year. Choose an object they can return to in their daily ritual long after the day.
