Pitru Tarpana — Koti Tirtha, Gokarna
What This Remedy Does
Pitru Tarpana at Koti Tirtha, the sacred tank of Gokarna, is an offering of water and black sesame to your ancestors. A local priest performs it on your behalf, speaking your name, your gotra and your ancestors' names in the sankalp. Within 3 to 4 days, photos or video of the rite come to you on WhatsApp.
What is Pitru Tarpana?
Pitru Tarpana, also written Pitru Tarpanam, is the offering of water with black sesame, or til, to the ancestors. As the water is offered, the priest chants the ancestors' names and the family's gotra. It honours three generations on both the father's and the mother's side. Tradition performs it at holy waters on Amavasya, the new-moon day, and during Mahalaya Paksha, the fortnight for ancestors. At Gokarna it is offered at Koti Tirtha, the temple tank where families perform rites for their ancestors.
Why devotees book it
- Remembering and honouring parents, grandparents and great-grandparents on both sides of the family
- A prayer for peace for the departed and, in faith, for their moksha
- A traditional remedy for pitru dosha, offered calmly and with respect
- Seeking the ancestors' blessings for the family's well-being and harmony
- Keeping a death anniversary when the family cannot travel to Gokarna
When to book
Amavasya, the new-moon day, is the traditional day for tarpana, especially Thai, Aadi and Mahalaya Amavasya. The fortnight of Mahalaya, or Pitru, Paksha and the death anniversary of a loved one are also kept. Share the tithi, the lunar date of the passing, if you know it. Our team then fixes the date for Koti Tirtha with you on WhatsApp.
About Koti Tirtha
Koti Tirtha is the sacred temple tank of Gokarna, close to the Mahabaleshwara Temple, in Uttara Kannada district on the Karnataka coast. Pilgrims bathe in the sea and at Koti Tirtha, and families perform rites for their ancestors at its waters. This tarpana is done at the tank by a local priest, separate from the Mahabaleshwara Temple's own sevas. Offering water to one's ancestors at a holy tank of Gokarna is, for many families, a cherished duty.
