Ganga Dussehra 2024: Celebrating the Divine Essence of the Ganges

by Suraj Singh on Jun 08, 2024

Ganga Dussehra, also known as Ganga Dhaaraa or Ganga Dashara, is a spiritual journey spanning ten days dedicated to honoring the divine essence of Ganga Maata. This year, it culminates on Ganga Dashmi on June 16, 2024.

Ganga Maataa is highly revered in Hinduism. Scriptures overflow with references to her worship. Shree Krishna himself proclaimed, “I am the Gangaa among rivers.” In the Ramayana, Sita Maataa prayed to Ganga for the safe return of Shree Raam, Lakshman, and herself to Ayodhya. Shree Ram himself paid homage to the blessed river after worshipping a clay image of Shiva Bhagwan.

The Story of Ganga Dussehra

Long ago, King Bhagirath wanted to help his ancestors find peace. He prayed to the gods, and Lord Brahma agreed to help. But bringing the Ganges down to Earth was no easy task. Lord Brahma asked Lord Shiva for his help. Ganga agreed to come down from the heavens, but her powerful waters could wash away everything. Lord Shiva caught the mighty river in his hair, and only a gentle stream trickled down to Earth.
