An idol for a home mandir has to satisfy two things at once — it should be a form your family worships, and it should physically suit the shelf it will stand on for years. How to choose

• Material decides use: brass takes abhishek and washing, while resin and marble-effect finishes must stay dry.
• Measure the mandir shelf for height and depth before ordering, as listed height excludes the base on some pieces.
• Posture and form carry meaning — a seated Ganesha, a blessing Hanuman and a dancing Nataraja suit very different spaces.
• Weight matters on wall shelves and car dashboards, where solid brass may be impractical.
