Kanda Sashti is observed mainly in Tamil Nadu and by Tamil communities worldwide. Devotees of Lord Murugan, also known as Kartikeya and Subramanya, keep a fast and pray through the six days.

This page explains the meaning of Kanda Sashti, the vratham and the chants devotees use. It also helps you choose a Murugan idol, a Vel piece or a Karungali mala for your own practice.

Kanda Sashti significance

Kanda Sashti recalls the victory of Lord Murugan over the demon Surapadman. In the story, Murugan receives the Vel, a divine spear, from Goddess Parvati and defeats Surapadman on the sixth day. The day of the victory is called Soorasamharam.

Devotees see the festival as the triumph of good over evil. It is observed in the Tamil month of Aippasi, when many Murugan temples hold special rites.

Kanda Sashti vratham, puja and mantra

Many devotees keep a fast during the six days, called the Sashti vratham. Some eat one simple meal a day, while others fast more strictly. Please follow your own health and family guidance.

Common practices include visiting a Murugan temple, lighting a lamp and reciting the Kanda Sashti Kavacham. A short chant is Om Saravana Bhava. Ask your family or priest about the rites you should follow.

Soorasamharam

Soorasamharam is the high point of the festival. At many Murugan temples, the battle is re-enacted on the sixth day, and devotees gather to watch and pray. Some also join the prayers at home by reciting hymns for Murugan.

Temple customs differ by place, so follow the practice of your own temple and family. Dates and timings depend on the Panchang and the temple, so this page does not list them.

Choosing Murugan and Vel forms

Choose an altar form for your home mandir, or a piece that carries the symbolism of the Vel. Compare a pendant, mala or idol by material, size and how you plan to use it.

Browse Sacred God Idols, Karungali malai, spiritual jewellery and Karungali. The Karungali Vel pieces are devotional display pieces and jewellery. Do not assume a display Vel is equipment for kavadi or piercing rituals.
