Puthandu is the Tamil New Year, kept on the first day of the month of Chithirai. Vishu is the new year of Kerala, kept on the first day of Medam. Both follow the solar calendar.

Each festival has its own customs. This page explains them and helps you choose a Krishna form and a lamp for a Vishu display, or pieces for your Puthandu puja.

Puthandu customs

Puthandu begins the Tamil year. Homes are cleaned, kolams are drawn, and families visit temples. A common custom is to see auspicious things first thing in the morning, such as fruit, flowers and a lamp.

A festive meal often includes a dish that mixes several tastes. Many families wear new clothes and spend the day visiting elders and relatives. Follow your family's custom for the day.

Vishu and the Vishukkani

Vishu is the new year of Kerala. Its central custom is the Vishukkani, or first sight. The night before, families arrange rice, fruit, vegetables, flowers, a mirror, a lamp and an image of Krishna. They wake and see it first in the morning.

Elders also give small gifts, called Vishukkaineettam, to younger family members. Customs vary, so follow your own household's tradition.

Vishu 2026: choosing a Krishna form and lamp for the display

This page is a selection of reusable devotional pieces, not a complete Vishukkani kit. Arrange the fresh produce, rice, mirror, flowers and other items your family uses separately. Check each product listing before ordering.

Compare the size and material of each Krishna idol and lamp against the space where you will arrange the display. Browse Sacred God Idols and All Frame and Idols.

Puja pieces and gifts for the new year

For Puthandu, choose pieces for your home puja, such as a lamp, a thali or a small idol. For a gift, pick something the family can use through the year, not only on the day.

Explore Jaap Mala and Spiritual Jewellery for devotional gifts, and read the stated size and material first. Check the care note on each item, as brass, wood and plated finishes need different handling.
