How is the Sawan Month associated with Lord Shiva?

The association is linked to the legend of ‘Samudra Manthan’ that is the churning of the ocean in the search for amrit. During the manthan, 14 rubies were found out of which 13 were divided among the Devas and Asuras, but the 14th one, Halahal, was poison. It could end the universe and every living being. Lord Shiva, to solve this, consumed the poison and saved the world. From then on, he came to be called ‘Nilkantha’ or someone with a blue throat.

All the devas started offering him the water of the Holy Ganges to reduce the impact. This incident happened in the month of Shravan and thus came to be associated with Lord Shiva and his selfless love for his devotees. During this month, the followers of Shiva do puja and rituals to try to please Lord Shiva and get their wishes and prayers fulfilled.
