Makar Sankranti significance and the harvest season
Makar Sankranti is a solar festival. It marks the Sun's entry into Makar rashi and the start of Uttarayan, the Sun's northward path. It is also a harvest festival, when many families give thanks.
Customs differ by region. Many homes make sweets with sesame (til) and jaggery. In Tamil Nadu, the harvest festival is Pongal, and rice is cooked in a pot until it boils over.
Makar Sankranti puja at home
On the day, many families bathe early, pour water for the Sun and light a lamp at the home shrine. Some visit a river or a temple. Makar Sankranti rituals differ by region and family, so follow your elders or your priest.
A simple home setup can include a thali for the puja articles, a lamp for aarti and incense. The pieces in this edit cover each of these.
Puja pieces in this edit
This edit lists five pieces. Each product page states its size, material and care.
- Antique Gold Premium Brass Pooja Thaal (Set of 5), for arranging puja articles.
- Brass Aarti Diya, for the lamp used in aarti.
- Lord Krishna Kamdhenu cow with calf, a brass idol.
- Divine Ganesha Pocket Temple, gold and silver plated.
- Natural Chandan Agarbatti, a pack of 30 incense sticks.
In Hindu tradition, Kamdhenu is the divine cow, and cattle are honoured on Mattu Pongal in Tamil Nadu.
Makar Sankranti gifts
Looking for Makar Sankranti gift ideas? Think about how the person prays. A pocket temple suits a desk or a small shrine, and a pack of chandan incense suits daily puja.
A thali set or an aarti diya suits a home mandir. Check the size and material on each product page before you choose.
