Varalakshmi Vratam, known as Varamahalakshmi in Karnataka, is observed on a Friday in the month of Shravan, usually the one before the full moon. Families, often led by the women of the household, worship Goddess Lakshmi at home.

In northern India, Shravan or Sawan is also the month when many devotees honour Lord Shiva, especially on Mondays. This page covers both observances and how to choose puja pieces.

Varamahalakshmi puja and the Lakshmi vratam

Varalakshmi is the form of Goddess Lakshmi worshipped as the giver of boons in tradition. The vratam is observed in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Families decorate a kalash and an image of the goddess, and prepare a simple festive meal.

The puja follows the practice of each household, so use your family's method or ask your priest. In Karnataka the festival is also called Varamahalakshmi Habba.

Shravan and Shiva worship

Shravan is a month closely associated with Lord Shiva. Many devotees visit Shiva temples on Mondays, pour water over the Shivling and chant Om Namah Shivaya. Some keep a Monday fast.

The Purnimanta and Amanta calendars place the month boundaries differently, so Shravan does not begin on the same day everywhere. Follow your local calendar for Shravan Mondays. Plan lamps, flowers and a quiet corner for japa on each Monday you observe.

Choosing Lakshmi forms and Shiva pieces

Choose the observance first. Explore Shiva pieces, such as Rudraksha, for Shravan, or Lakshmi forms for the Friday vratam. Then choose the size, material and prayer accessories that fit your existing practice.

Browse Sacred God Idols, All Frame and Idols and Rudraksha Malas and Beads. Check the stated size and material before you add an item to your cart.

Varamahalakshmi 2026 dates and puja time

Confirm the Varamahalakshmi date 2026 and the required items with your family or priest. The puja time, or muhurat, depends on your city and your family's calendar, so there is no single time for everyone.

The date shown at the top of this page is a reference for the year. For Varamahalakshmi 2027 and other years, check a local panchang.
