Solid brass build.
Line the bowl with a pinch of sand or ash before you light the coal — it spreads the heat, protects the base from scorching, and lets you tip the residue out in one go afterwards. Let the brass cool completely before cleaning, then lift the soot with a dry cloth and a little of that same ash, which scours the metal far more gently than soap and water.
