Rule of thumb: perform the shraddha on the tithi (lunar day) on which the person passed away. If the tithi is not known, choose Sarva Pitru Amavasya, Saturday 10 October 2026. The pandits fix the exact muhurat on the day; on 26 September the lunar eclipse moves tarpan to after moksha-kaal.

What is Pitra Dosh in a kundli?
Pitra Dosh is a yoga read in the birth chart when the Sun (or Moon) is afflicted by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn, especially in the ninth house of ancestors and dharma. Traditional astrology links it to delays in marriage, difficulty having children, money that does not stay, and recurring quarrels in the family, and prescribes Pitru Dosh Nivaran puja and shraddha as the remedy.
How much does Pitru Dosh Nivaran puja cost?
₹7,100 in Varanasi and ₹11,000 in Gaya. Both include the havan, tarpan, pind daan, Brahmin bhojan, dakshina and samagri; the Gaya price reflects pind daan at Vishnupad.
Is Pitru Paksha the best time for Pitru Dosh Nivaran?
Yes. The puja can be done any time of year, but the fortnight of Pitru Paksha — when the ancestors are believed to be closest — is held to be the most effective, with Sarva Pitru Amavasya (10 October 2026) the most preferred day.
Should I choose Varanasi or Gaya?
Choose Gaya if you want the pind daan part performed at Vishnupad, the tirtha associated with moksha of ancestors. Choose Varanasi for the same vidhi at the Ganga ghats at a lower price. The havan and mantras are the same.
