Tulsi is unusual among the materials in this series, because the fraud is not really about money. A tulsi plant is common, grows in millions of Indian courtyards, and the raw material costs almost nothing — nobody fakes tulsi to save on timber. What happens instead is industrial: a bead workshop that produces thousands of identical small wooden beads a day does not much care which log they came from, and "tulsi" is simply the label that sells them. The buyer, meanwhile, is often looking for something quite specific and devotional, which makes the mismatch worse. What a genuine tulsi bead actually is
Tulsi, or holy basil, is Ocimum tenuiflorum — also written Ocimum sanctum — a member of the mint family, Lamiaceae. It is a subshrub: a small perennial that becomes woody at the base as it ages but never becomes a tree. Two forms are commonly venerated and used: Rama tulsi, with green leaves and a paler wood, and Shyama or Krishna tulsi, with purple-tinged foliage and typically a slightly darker wood.
Beads are turned from the woody stem and, less commonly, from the root of a mature plant. Everything that follows from that is the identification method.
Why size is the first and best test
A well-grown tulsi plant of several years develops a main stem that is typically somewhere around a finger's thickness at the base, and thinner everywhere above it. Turning a round bead requires a blank wider than the bead, and turning a clean round bead requires margin beyond that. The arithmetic is unforgiving: genuine tulsi beads are small, commonly in the range of about four to eight millimetres, and traditional tulsi kanthis use beads smaller still.
So when you see a "tulsi mala" of large, perfectly round ten or twelve millimetre beads, you are looking at something a tulsi plant cannot easily have produced. It is not absolutely impossible — an exceptionally old plant, or a root section, can yield a larger blank — but it is scarce, expensive, and would be described as such rather than sold in bulk. Large uniform beads at commodity prices are the clearest single signal in the whole category.
The pith — the feature almost nobody knows to look for
A stem has a pith: a soft, spongy core at its centre. When a bead is turned from a slender stem, the turner is working very close to that core, and on a great many genuine tulsi stem beads the pith is visible at the drill hole as a slightly darker, softer or faintly hollow centre. Shine a phone torch into the hole of several beads. On beads turned from a proper log — mango, poplar, pine, whatever the workshop had — the grain reads as ordinary uniform wood right up to the bore, because the blank came from the middle of a wide board.
This is not present on every genuine bead. Root beads do not show it, and neither do beads turned slightly off-centre. But when it is present it is a strong positive indicator, and positive indicators are rare in this category.

Tests that actually work
1. Measure the beads
Start here, because it is the most decisive thing you can do and takes ten seconds. Genuine tulsi beads are small. If the beads on a "tulsi mala" are large, perfectly round and identical, ask what plant they came from. This test alone eliminates a large share of what is sold.
2. Torch the drill holes and look for pith
Shine a phone torch into the bore of five or six beads across the mala. You are looking for a slightly darker, softer or faintly hollow centre where the stem's pith was — present on many genuine stem beads and essentially never on beads turned from board timber. You are also checking that the interior colour matches the exterior, which catches surface staining.
3. Weigh it in the hand
Hold the tulsi mala in one hand and a sandalwood, rosewood or rudraksha mala in the other. Tulsi should feel conspicuously light. A heavy "tulsi" mala is another wood. Note the direction of the logic here: in this one category, light is the correct answer, which is the opposite of what most authenticity advice assumes.
4. Raking light for grain, and bead-to-bead comparison
Tilt beads near a window so light skims the surface. You want fine, straight, close grain with visible pores, and you want the beads to differ from each other in tone and figure. Uniformity across 108 beads means machine selection or machine manufacture. Composite beads show no directional grain at all — just an even speckle in every direction.
5. The water-drop absorbency test
This is the useful water test, and it is not the float test. Put one drop of water on a bead and wait thirty seconds. Solid porous wood darkens at the spot and takes the water in. Plastic, resin and heavily lacquered beads hold it as a bead on the surface. Wood-powder composite absorbs slowly and unevenly. It is quick, non-destructive, and it separates the three commonest fake categories from real wood.
6. Damp white cloth for dye
Rub one bead firmly with a damp white cloth for twenty seconds and look at the cloth in daylight. Genuine untreated tulsi is pale and transfers nothing. Brown transfer means stain, and stain on something sold as tulsi usually means a pale wood being aged artificially.
7. Warm and smell, with the right expectation
Rub a bead briskly between the palms and smell it. A new genuine tulsi bead has a faint herbal, slightly clove-like note. Subtle is correct. A strong, sweet, obvious fragrance means applied oil. No smell at all on an old mala means nothing either way, because the natural aroma fades within months.
8. Look at the whole piece
Check the thread, the knotting, the guru bead and the finish of the drill holes. A workshop that has cut corners on the material rarely spends on the assembly. Splintered hole edges, mismatched bead sizes and cheap cord all correlate with substitution. Tests that do not work, and why
The float test — and it is backwards here
This is the single most important correction on this page. Advice circulating everywhere says a genuine bead sinks in water. That rule comes from rudraksha and from ebony, both of which are dense. Tulsi is a light, porous wood, and genuine tulsi beads commonly float. People run the test, watch their real mala bob on the surface, and conclude they have been cheated.
The test is useless in the other direction too, since a plastic bead may float and a stone-filled composite will sink. It answers nothing about tulsi and it damages the mala — repeated wetting swells and shrinks the beads, works them loose on the cord and can leave a strung mala misshapen. Use the water-drop absorbency test instead, which uses a single drop, tells you something real, and harms nothing.
The burn test
Holding a flame to a bead tells you that plastic smells of plastic and wood smells of wood. It does not tell you which wood, which is the entire question, since the commonest fake is a different wood. It also destroys a bead from a mala meant for devotional use. There is no version of this that is worth doing.
The scratch test
Tulsi is soft. Scratching it will mark it — and it will also mark mango, poplar and pine, which is exactly what you are trying to distinguish it from. The test damages the piece and returns no information.
The "strong tulsi smell means it is real" test
Backwards in practice. Applied fragrance oil produces a far stronger and more persistent tulsi scent than the plant itself, so a bead that smells powerfully of basil is more likely to be perfumed than genuine. Faint is correct; strong is a warning.
The "real tulsi never darkens" claim
Also backwards. Genuine tulsi darkens with wear as it takes up oils from the skin, and a long-worn mala goes deep reddish brown. That patina is a mark of use, not of a fake. What is suspicious is even darkening on a new mala, which points to stain.
Overnight soaking
Sometimes recommended to see whether the water changes colour. Dye will indeed leach — but so will the natural extractives of genuine wood, and either way you have soaked a mala for twelve hours, which is the fastest way to loosen every bead on it. The damp-cloth test gives the same information in twenty seconds.

What a lab report does and does not prove for tulsi
An honest answer that most sellers will not give: almost nobody laboratory-tests tulsi beads, and there is a reason. Wood identification is a real discipline — a wood anatomist can identify a species from the arrangement of vessels, rays and fibres under a microscope on a properly prepared section — but it requires sampling, it costs considerably more than a tulsi mala, and it consumes material. For an inexpensive devotional item nobody commissions it.
Which leads to three practical points:
- A "certificate" on a tulsi mala is usually a seller-issued document. That is not automatically dishonest, but it is not third-party evidence. Look for a named laboratory, a report number and a stated method. If those are missing, treat it as a marketing document and rely on the physical checks.
- No certificate anywhere speaks to devotional matters. A laboratory identifies material. Tulsi's place in Vaishnava tradition is a matter of faith and custom, and no document addresses it.

Price as a signal: what "too cheap" means for tulsi
Tulsi is inexpensive, and it should be. The plant is common, the wood is not rare, and a genuine 108-bead tulsi mala is one of the most affordable devotional objects there is. So a low price is not, by itself, a warning sign — which makes tulsi different from ebony or a higher rudraksha, and means you have to read other signals.

What to ask a seller
- Are these stem beads or root beads? The best opening question, because it separates people who know the material from people reselling a listing.
- What is the bead diameter in millimetres? Then measure it when it arrives.
- Has the wood been stained, dyed, lacquered or scented in any way? Untreated is the norm for tulsi and should be easy to confirm.
- Are the beads solid turned wood, or a pressed composite? Ask it in those words.
- Rama or Shyama tulsi? A seller who has handled the material will answer without hesitating.
- If there is a certificate, which laboratory issued it and what is the report number? An honest "it is our own document" is a better answer than a vague one.
- What is the return policy if the beads show no pith and no grain variation?
Where fakes enter the market
- Bulk bead wholesalers. Plain wooden beads are produced by the tonne for craft and costume use and enter the devotional market labelled by appearance rather than by species. This is the origin of most substitution.
- Pilgrimage and temple-town stalls, particularly around Vaishnava centres, where demand is high and buyers are passing through.
- Open marketplaces, where listing photographs are shared between sellers and "100% original tulsi" is a title convention rather than a description.
- Combo and gift packaging, where a mala is bundled with other items and nothing in the box is individually described.
- Social video selling, where the on-camera demonstration is usually the float test — which, for tulsi, gives the wrong answer even when the mala is genuine.
A note on how tulsi is customarily obtained
One point belongs here because buyers ask about it. In Vaishnava tradition the tulsi plant is treated with particular reverence, and custom around harvesting the wood is careful: many households and temples use wood only from a plant that has completed its natural life, and observe restrictions on which days the plant may be cut. Practice varies considerably by region, community and family, and a seller who can speak to how their material is sourced is telling you something worth knowing. A five-minute check when the parcel arrives
- Measure a bead and compare with the listing. Small is right.
- Torch five or six drill holes, looking for pith and for interior colour matching the exterior.
- Weigh the mala against another mala you own. Tulsi should feel notably light.
- Raking light on several beads. Fine straight grain, visible pores, and genuine variation between beads.
- One drop of water on one bead. It should darken and soak in within half a minute.
- Damp white cloth, twenty seconds. The cloth should stay clean.
- Warm one bead and smell it. Faint and herbal, or nothing. Not a strong perfume.
- Count the beads — 108 plus the guru bead on a full japa mala.
- Check the stringing, knots and hole edges.
- If two or more checks fail, return it inside the window.
