No home test separates them by material, because there is no material difference. What separates them is colour behaviour:
- Heat-treated amethyst characteristically shows a near-colourless or whitish base with the orange concentrating towards one end, and the tone tends to a strong burnt or reddish orange. In faceted or tumbled beads it often reads as vivid and slightly artificial.

Under a loupe in good light you should be able to resolve individual flakes, each catching the light at its own angle as you tilt the bead.
What replaces it:
- Dyed green quartzite or howlite — no aventurescence at all, and the colour concentrates in cracks and around the drill hole. An acetone swab on an inconspicuous spot lifts dye.
- Green glass — no flakes, occasional round bubbles, swirl lines, a faint mould seam.
- Green goldstone — man-made glass with metallic inclusions, which does sparkle, but the sparkle is uniform, dense and metallic rather than the softer, more scattered mica shimmer of aventurine.

Set a phone or laptop screen to plain white, hold one lens from a pair of polarised sunglasses above it and rotate the lens until the screen goes dark. Now place a clear bead between the two and turn it slowly through a full rotation. Genuine quartz brightens and darkens four times. Glass, melted quartz and acrylic stay dark. Try two or three beads in different orientations, since a bead viewed down its optic axis can appear to fail. Checks that apply to the whole bracelet
1. Loupe every drill hole
