What This Remedy Does

Duration: As per temple schedule

On the edge of Madurai, Thiruparankundram's Subramaniya Swamy Temple, the first of Murugan's six abodes, offers this Murugan Archana in your name. Its priests chant Murugan's names, usually the 108 of the ashtottara, offering flowers or kumkum at each name. Up to four names and your gotra are spoken in the sankalp, and the temple receipt or a WhatsApp confirmation follows.

What is Murugan Archana?

An archana is the chanting of a deity's names while the priest offers a flower or a pinch of kumkum at each one. Usually the 108 names, called the ashtottara, are recited. It is the most common seva in South Indian temples. In the sankalp the priest says the devotee's name, gotra and nakshatra, or birth star, so the archana is offered on that person's behalf. At Thiruparankundram it is offered to Murugan, who by tradition married Deivanai here.

Why devotees book it

  • A prayer for marriage, since by tradition Murugan married Deivanai at Thiruparankundram
  • Peace, harmony and well-being for the whole family
  • Blessings before an exam, a journey, an interview or a new venture
  • Thanksgiving to Murugan on a birthday or a wedding anniversary

When to book

Tuesday, Murugan's weekly day, is the usual choice, along with a birthday kept by birth star. A wedding anniversary also fits well here, where tradition places Murugan's own marriage. Festival days of the temple are another option, and the exact date is settled with you on WhatsApp.

About Subramaniya Swamy Temple

Thiruparankundram stands on the edge of Madurai, in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu, and is the first of the six abodes of Murugan. Its Subramaniya Swamy Temple is cut into the rock of a hill. Tradition holds that Murugan married Deivanai, also called Devasena, at this place. For that reason families come here to pray for marriage, and an archana at Thiruparankundram is a natural way to offer that prayer.
