What This Remedy Does

Duration: As per vidhi

Pitru Tarpan at Gangotri Dham is the offering of water to your ancestors, made at Gangotri, where the Ganga is called the Bhagirathi. It is performed by a local priest, either on the Bhagirathi ghat or at a ritual venue close to the temple. The sankalp includes up to four names, with your gotra.

What is Pitru Tarpan?

In tarpan, water with til (black sesame), barley and kusha grass is offered to the ancestors as their names and gotra are spoken. Here it is offered at Gangotri, where the Ganga's source stream is known as the Bhagirathi. A local priest performs it with up to four names in the sankalp, while the shrine is open. Our team shares the exact place and the materials with you on WhatsApp. Families offer it so that their pitrs may find peace and contentment.

Why devotees book it

  • Remembering a departed parent or grandparent at the source of the Ganga
  • Prayer for peace and contentment for the pitrs, the family's ancestors
  • A traditional remedy for pitru dosh, offered at a Char Dham tirtha
  • Seeking the ancestors' blessings for children, home and family life

When to book

Tarpan is traditionally offered in Pitru Paksha, on Amavasya and on an ancestor's death anniversary, or tithi. At Gangotri, the rite can be scheduled only while the dham is open, from the spring Kapat opening to the closing before winter. If a tithi falls while it is closed, the tarpan is scheduled after it reopens.

About Gangotri Dham

Gangotri Dham, one of the Char Dham, is in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Maa Ganga's temple there stands high in the Himalayas, on the banks of the Bhagirathi, the Ganga's name at Gangotri. Many families feel that offering water to their ancestors at the source of the Ganga is a fitting act of remembrance. Your tarpan is offered beside the river on the ghat, or at a ritual venue close to the temple.
